UNECE Resource Management Week 2024: A Leap Forward in Sustainable Resource Management

by | May 1, 2024 | News | 0 comments

Met4Tech researchers were among those presenting to over 300 leaders and experts from around the world at the UNECE Resource Management Week 2024, and the Expert Group on Resource Management (EGRM-15) meeting, in Geneva from 22-26 April 2024.

Prof Frances Wall, Dr Eva Marquis, Prof Markus Zils (Theme 2 researchers) were invited to showcase the Case Study on a sustainable mining initiative in Cornwall, which is based on applying the UNRMS principles and framework.

This event saw experts discuss their applications of the UNFC (United Nations Framework Classification for Resources) and the new UNRMS (United Nations Resource Management System) framework.

This UK case example, and first global case example, has now been formally published by the UNECE and provides a preliminary assessment supporting Cornwall’s responsible resource management journey.

This UNECE event also marked the official launch of the new International Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Resource Management (ICE-SRM) based in the UK, which is a research consortium formed by the University of Exeter, the BGS, University College London, and Brunel and Swansea Universities.

There are several new ICE-SRM’s located worldwide (e.g. Central Asia, UK, Mexico, etc.) whose role is to build capacity on UNFC and UNRMS and share best practices globally. (insert link to previous M4T blog on ICE)

In addition, our Met4Tech Theme 1 Co-Lead, Professor Markus Zils (University of Exeter Business School), and our Met4Tech project partner Dr Sarah Gordon (CEO of Satarla), gave lectures on circular data and natural resource ecosystems.

The slides and recordings of the presentations and other related information can be viewed here; and the photos taken during the event are also available here.
